But isn’t plastic less costly (in environmental terms) to manufacture and recycle than glass? By the time you factor in the heavier weight and greater bulk that increases transportation cost and fuel use, the high temperatures needed for manufacture and recycling, etc. glass jars aren’t exactly environmentally friendly as a packaging option. The impracticality of serilizing and reusing glass bottles and jars, rather than recycling them, prevents glass being truly environmentally friendly. Just because it’s older, doesn’t automatically make it a greener option.
